What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a constant feeling of nervousness, worry, or ruminating thoughts, often without a clear cause. Anxiety can present in a variety of ways, such as restlessness of mind & body, difficulty concentrating, or not being able to calm your racing thoughts.

Occasional anxiety is a normal stress response, but when it starts to disrupt daily life—like with social or performance anxiety—it may indicate a deeper issue. Seeking anxiety therapy in these cases can help manage symptoms and enhance well-being.

Approaches Used in Anxiety Therapy

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps you manage anxiety by helping you build awareness of your thoughts and reactions, leading to more mindful responses instead of habitual, anxious ones. This approach combines mindfulness practices with cognitive techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), empowering you to recognize and release negative thought patterns and fostering a holistic mind-body connection.

Using a mind-body connection approach in therapy for anxiety helps you understand how physical sensations and emotional experiences are connected. This holistic approach allows you to address anxiety through techniques that calm both the mind & body, using practices like breathwork, movement, and awareness exercises to reduce stress responses and build resilience.

Incorporating mindfulness in therapy for anxiety allows you to become more aware of your present-moment experiences, helping you to observe anxious thoughts without judgement. This practice fosters a sense of calm and control, enabling you to respond to stressors more thoughtfully and reduce overall anxiety.

Integrating self-compassion in therapy helps you manage anxiety by encouraging a kinder, more understanding relationship with yourself, reducing self-criticism and promoting emotional resilience. This approach supports you in nurturing a compassionate mindset, empowering you to face anxiety with greater self-acceptance and care.

Different types of talk therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), can help you explore and reshape thought patterns contributing to your anxiety. Talk therapy provides a safe space to understand your inner experiences, develop healthier coping strategies, and build a stronger mind-body connection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Anxiety & Social Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety symptoms vary from person to person. Anywhere from ruminating thoughts and fear to physical problems like digestive issues. A feeling of constant dread, worry, or fraud syndrome is also common.

Mindfulness and meditation address the mental and physical needs of anxiety. They look at how thoughts are felt in body sensations such as tightness and ill-at-ease and what body sensations drive certain thoughts. It’s not about making thoughts go away (you would if you could) but rather about looking at them as thoughts and building a different relationship to them.

A good therapist will help you step back from thoughts and where they are felt in the body. They will help you detach from them enough to heal from troubling thoughts and build a different relationship with thinking.

Therapy is about bringing compassion and understanding to yourself, bringing kindness to the parts of your suffering, and creating a loving relationship with yourself. It’s about stopping that critical voice that tells you you’re not good enough. When you heal your relationship with yourself, you can heal other relationships and set healthy boundaries.

Self-compassion is about bringing kindness to those parts of you that are hurting, whether physically or mentally. It’s about acknowledging that suffering is here and that you can be with it rather than denying or trying to make it go away.

Anxiety is a general feeling of worry or fear that can arise in many situations, often unrelated to specific events or people. Social anxiety, on the other hand, is a type of anxiety triggered by social interactions or situations where someone feels judged, embarrassed, or under scrutiny by others. While both can cause distress, social anxiety focuses more on fears of being negatively evaluated in social settings, which can lead to avoidance of these situations. I offer online therapy in Ontario for anxiety and social anxiety.
