The 90-Second Rule: How Sitting With Your Emotions Heals the Body and Mind

Have you ever noticed how quickly strong emotions take over your body? One moment you’re calm, and the next you’re flooded with anger, fear, or sadness. During my Buddhist studies, I learned something life-changing: when we resist sitting with these feelings, we unknowingly harm ourselves. The mind spins stories, the body holds tension, and the cycle of suffering continues.

But science backs up what mindfulness has been teaching for centuries. Neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor describes this as the 90-second rule.

What Is the 90-Second Rule?

Imagine you’re driving and suddenly someone cuts you off. In that split second, your body is flooded with adrenaline and stress hormones so you can react and stay safe.

Here’s the fascinating part: within 90 seconds, those stress chemicals naturally dissipate, and your body returns to balance, if you let it.

What keeps us stuck in stress long after the moment has passed? Not the event itself, but the stories we tell ourselves afterward:

  • “That driver did it on purpose.”
  • “Why does this always happen to me?”
  • “People are so careless!”

It isn’t the car or the driver keeping us tense—it’s the ongoing narrative in our minds.

Why We Resist Feeling

Here’s the truth: no one really wants to feel these uncomfortable emotions. Fear, grief, shame, and anger can feel overwhelming. But when we push them away, they don’t actually disappear.

As the saying goes:
“What you resist, persists. What you feel, you can heal.”

The body is asking to release, but the mind keeps holding on. Sitting with the discomfort is the doorway to relief.

How the Body Holds the Mind’s Stories

This realization hit me deeply. Every thought I entertained had a physical impact on my body. The tension, the racing heart, the knot in the stomach, all of it was being fueled by my mind’s interpretation of events.

When I learned to sit with the raw sensations in my body, without judgment, without spinning more stories, I discovered something powerful: the emotions moved through me.

My Personal Healing Experience

Some of my most profound moments of healing happened when I allowed myself to fully feel my pain. At times, I would curl into the fetal position, overcome by raw sensations that felt unbearable, as though I might explode.

And yet, within 90 seconds, the intensity would begin to soften. My body would release what my mind had been clinging to. Relief, spaciousness, and even peace would follow.

The practice taught me that emotions are meant to be felt, not avoided. When we allow them to move through us, the body knows how to let go.

A Lesson From Nature

A wonderful example of this process is found in nature. Watch this short video of a polar bear releasing trauma after a near-death experience: Polar Bear Trauma Release.

Just like the bear, we are wired to shake, feel, and release our stress responses if we allow ourselves the space to do so.

Final Thoughts

The 90-second rule is more than neuroscience; it’s an invitation to practice mindfulness. Instead of resisting our emotions or drowning in the stories we tell ourselves, we can pause, breathe, and feel.

By sitting with the sensations in the body, we honor the truth that healing happens when the mind quiets and the body is allowed to release.
